“The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman" - Malcom X, 1962

“When Black women show any emotion of hurt or pain, they are made to feel weak and are treated as if their feelings are invalid. They are degraded by society and are treated as if they are unworthy of care and love. They are told that they need to “man up” and that they can’t feel— that they shouldn’t. The world doesn’t care for Black women the way that it should and they are left to fend for themselves. These images depict a story that could be told forward or backward. They tell of the journey one chooses to take to acknowledge their emotions and find strength in them, or the journey one is forced to take to suppress their emotions and accept the societal mistreatment of Black women.
